5' x 3' Scottish Flag | National Flag of Scotland | Saltire / St. Andrew's Cross Flags
The term "Saltire" comes from the diagonal "X" shape of the cross, which is associated with Saint Andrew, Scotland's patron saint. According to tradition, Saint Andrew was crucified on a diagonal cross, which is reflected in the flag's design.
Viking involvement in Scotland began with early raids in the late 8th century, with the first recorded attack on the monastery of Iona in 795 AD. Over the next few decades, Norwegian Vikings targeted the northern and western coasts of Scotland, raiding and eventually settling in the Orkney, Shetland, and Hebrides islands.
During the 9th and 10th centuries, Norwegian Vikings expanded their influence over much of northern and western Scotland. They established control over the Kingdom of the Isles, which included the Hebrides, Isle of Man, and parts of the mainland. Viking leaders like Thorfinn the Mighty extended Norse rule into mainland Scotland, engaging in battles with local Scottish kings, such as Macbeth. The blending of Norse and Gaelic cultures during this period led to the creation of a distinct Norse-Gaelic identity, particularly in the Hebrides and western Scotland.
