This scene most likely represents the story of the tragic romance between Sigurd and a Valkyrie named Brunhild. While variations of the story conflict, a common theme is that Brunhild (or Brynhild) desired to be burned with Sigurd at his funeral pyre. The original was painted in 1909 by Charles Ernest Butler.
