description

Entitled 'Loke and Sigyn", this image is of Loki being punished for the death of Baldur (son of Odin and brother of Thor). After making great lengths to hide himself, he was finally captured by Thor and the gods and tied to rocks with a poisonous snake above him, dripping venom into his face. His wife Sigyn would do her best to capture the poison in a bowl, but would still fail at times to stop each of the drips. Loki would not break free from these chains until Ragnarok.

The original was painted in 1863 by Marten Eskil Winge and the original is now on display at the National Museum in Stockholm Sweden.
