Norman Invasion Longship T-Shirt | Bayeux Tapestry Inspired

This Norman Invasion T-Shirt, inspired by the remarkable artwork of the Bayeux Tapestry is designed to resemble richly embroidered medieval needlework found on the tapestry. This particular scene depicts a Scandinavian-inspired longship carrying the forces of William, Duke of Normandy, during the Norman invasion of England in 1066.

Across the top and bottom of the design appears the original Latin inscription:

NAVES DVCIS EXERCITVS VENIVNT IN ANGLIAM

Loosely translated, it means:

"Duke (William's) fleet comes to England."

The ships portrayed in the Bayeux Tapestry reflect a shipbuilding tradition that descended directly from Viking longships. Although the Normans had become French-speaking Christians by 1066, their ancestors were Scandinavian settlers who established Normandy in the early tenth century, and many features of their vessels still retained unmistakable Viking influence.

The Bayeux Tapestry is an extraordinary embroidered narrative, nearly 230 feet (70 meters) in length, created during the late eleventh century. It chronicles the events leading up to and including the Norman Conquest of England, making it one of the world's most important surviving works of medieval art. Its detailed depictions of ships, warriors, armor, horses, and daily life provide historians with an invaluable contemporary glimpse into the final years of the Viking Age and the beginning of Norman England.
