The Kraken is a Scandinavian, legendary sea monster that lives in the sea between Norway and Iceland. It is described as an enormous cephalopod or octopus. Some believe the legend originated from sightings of giant squid, which may grow up to 50 feet (15m) long. The name Kraken derives from the Norwegian word krakjen, which in turn is based on the Old Norse word, Kraki (or krókr), which is a reference to a twisted, wooden hook used to grapple or drag things.

While most say the earliest reports of a Kraken were found in sea travel logs from the 1700's, others believe that the Kraken was first mentioned in the Icelandic saga, Örvar-Oddr, when it spoke of two sea monsters, the Hafgufa (sea reak) and the Lyngbakr (heather-back). The Hafgufa is believed to be the very first reference to the Kraken, and in the past it was once translated as Kraken.
