Thor's Rike (Thor's Kingdom): Welcome Viking Enthusiasts!

You’ve probably been to Disney World or Six Flags or Cedar Point. Those are all well and good, but what if you could hit a park built on the Viking theme? Well, now you can. It’s called Thor's Rike (Thor’s Kingdom in English) and it’s designed to attract Viking enthusiasts from all over the world. It’s located in the western Norwegian county of Hordaland, with the goal of putting a spin on the traditional theme park.

Flume rides and roller coasters will feature “infotainment” to educate visitors about Vikings and their history. Go back 1,000 years and discover what made the Vikings so great and all-empowering. You can even experience the thrill of authentic Viking raids! Slated for completion in 2018, this will be the largest theme park in Norway. Designed by ITEC Entertainment Group, Thor's Rike has been billed as a “theme park in Viking costume.”

Specifically, the park will serve the Hordaland and Sunnhordland regions of western Norway, the perfect spot for such a theme park because so many Viking roots sprouted here. Vikingland Development, the company behind the project, confirmed in 2014 that it had purchased land in the Sveio Municipality, looking to get 200 million kroner ($23.5 million) in investment capital before construction. Currently, the company is looking for as many investors as it can secure to fully fund the project. This is the same company that has led other famous amusement park projects like Tusenfryd near Oslo.

A Throwback to the Viking Age

Authenticity is a big selling point of Thor's Kingdom, as it sits right near where the original Viking capital once stood more than 1,000 years ago! You’ll get to relive legends and stories from the Viking Age throughout the park, which will be divided into various zones.

The mighty castle entrance greets you on the way in, which you can see from miles away. Enjoy the ruins of an old fort mingled in with an intricate tree trunk and its twisted roots. Make your way through the park as you travel through different worlds, eras and kingdoms:

• The Grotto: Here you’ll get a glimpse of the Norse underworld featuring a log ride that brings you dangerously close to Nidhogg and Garm.
• The Forest: In Asgard, you’ll come across ugly trolls, dwarves, elves and other Nordic creatures. You may even have a run-in with Fenris the wolf!
• Midtgard Tivoli: In Midgard market, you’ll take part in a beautiful festival with crafts made by local artisans, as well as games and entertainment.
• Harbour Village: The scenic Harbour Bridge brings you right to Harbour Village on the banks of a luminous lake dotted with a fleet of Viking ships.
• Valhalla: Take a walk across the Bifrost bridge that connects Midgard’s Harbour Village and Valhalla, punctuated by the great hall of Odin.
