The Swedish flag is often referred to as the "Blue and Yellow", "Sveriges flagga" (The Flag of Sweden) or "Blågula" in Swedish.  .

Like their Danish and Norwegian counterparts, Swedish Vikings participated in raids and settlements throughout Europe. However, Swedish Vikings were also heavily involved in eastward expeditions across the Baltic Sea, particularly toward modern-day Russia, Ukraine, and beyond.

They founded settlements and trading posts along the rivers, such as the Dnieper and Volga, which led them deep into the lands of the Slavs and eventually the Byzantine Empire. This group of Swedish Vikings is often referred to as the Rus, and they played a role in the formation of early Russian states. The Rus’ Khaganate and later Kievan Rus' were founded by Swedish Vikings.

The Varangian Guard, an elite unit of the Byzantine Empire, was composed largely of Swedish Vikings who acted as personal bodyguards to the Byzantine emperors.
